Want to be a mentor?
What is a Downstate mentor?
Each pair of mentors will be in charge of 12-14 students. We strive to make this program customized to the people we mentor. We will have a structured 6 sessions which use short and powerful interventions that develop resilience, decrease stress, and bolster one's mental health. Outside of these programs, our mentors strive to do one job. Support. This includes but is not limited to giving them academic tips, providing constructive mentorship, and listening to their mentees during stressful times.
What type of training do we get?
All mentors will recieve training that falls into the three dimensions: mentorship, facilitation, and referral. Our goal is that these skills can translate within their future roles as physicians enabling one to become more sensitive colleagues within their future careers. Training will most likely take place at the beginning of next year. Also, we are aware of the time committment that comes with medical school. Therefore, all our training will not conflict with any academic events.
What is the Time Commitment?
We are aware of the time constraits of our mentors. Therefore, we have shortened the time commitment to what we think would be the most effective. That means only 6-8 hours of required events between August and February. Mentors are also required to reach out to their mentees twice a month as well as meet with them one-on-one.
Application Process:
Our current application cycle is closed. Please check back in December for applications for Mentors Class II.
